چکیده

This paper presents a new approach for fitting a 3D morphable model to images of faces, using self-adapting feature layers (SAFL). The algorithm integrates feature detection into an iterative analysis-bysynthesis framework, combining the robustness of feature search with the flexibility of model fitting. Templates for facial features are created and updated while the fitting algorithm converges, so the templates adapt to the pose, illumination, shape and texture of the individual face. Unlike most existing feature-based methods, the algorithm does not search for the image locations with maximum response, which may be prone to errors, but forms a tradeoff between feature likeness, global feature configuration and image reconstruction error. The benefit of the proposed method is an increased robustness of model fitting with respect to errors in the initial feature point positions. Such residual errors are a problem when feature detection and model fitting are combined to form a fully automated face reconstruction or recognition system. We analyze the robustness in a face recognition scenario on images from two databases: FRGC and FERET.

Growing Neural Networks using Soft Competitive Learning

This paper gives an overview of some classical Growing Neural Networks (GNN) using soft competitive learning. In soft competitive learning each input signal is characterized by adapting in addition to the winner also some other neurons of the network. The GNN is also called the ANN with incremental learning. The artificial neural networks (ANN) mapping capability depends on the number of layers...

The Layers of Presence: A Bio-cultural Approach to Understanding Presence in Natural and Mediated Environments

This paper proposes a bio-cultural theory of presence based on four different positions related to the role and structure of presence, as follows. First, presence is a defining feature of self and it is related to the evolution of a key feature of any central nervous system: the embedding of sensory-referred properties into an internal functional space. Without the emergence of the sense of pre...

MENTA: A Quality Analysis Approach for Self-Adapting Systems

Self-adaptive behavior is a feature which architects needs to include in their systems in order to improve its reliability. However, despite several ways to get it, it is still hard to implement a self-adaptive system focused on non-functional properties. Difficulties to express quality attributes in the system without combining business logic with the self-adaptation logic and to include new s...

Adaptive object detection based on modified Hebbian learning

a b d This paper focuses on the issue of developing self-adapting automatic object detection systems for improving their performance. ’ b o general methodologies for performance improvement are first introduced. They are based on parameter optimizing and input adapting. Different modified Hebbian learning rules are developed to build adaptive feature extractors which transform the input data in...

Modular distribution of neurons with slowly adapting and rapidly adapting responses in area 3b of somatosensory cortex in monkeys.

Recordings from the representations of the glabrous digits in area 3b of the somatosensory cortex of owl and macaque monkeys revealed two types of neurons. Rapidly adapting (RA) neurons responded only at the onset and offset of a 1-s skin indentation. Slowly adapting (SA) neurons also responded to stimulus onset and offset but, in addition, they responded throughout the 1-s skin indentation. RA...
